My main area of interest for the last 8 years has been treating anxiety. I have helped hundreds of people make sense of and feel more comfortable with their anxiety. From extreme panic to mild nervousness, a vast range of people experience the benefits from this unique and powerful treatment for anxiety.
How Anxiety is Approached
First thing we need to remember is that humans have been dealing with the emotion of anxiety forever, it is normal for us to have anxiety. As horrible it is to have anxiety, it is useful to NOT try to wish away anxiety or to avoid allowing it to be there. It seems to be, that the stronger our intention is for it to go away the more it will continue to plague us. A few tips for approaching anxiety are the naming and acknowledging of anxiety as a feeling to yourself or even better telling someone you trust that you have such feelings. This simple and powerful 1st step can take away the high levels of intensity. Another approach is to attempt to understand or empathise with one self about what the personal needs are right in the moment. Do I feel unsettled or unsafe? What are those things that support me to feel safe or comfortable?
Anxiety in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine
In ancient Chinese Medicine anxiety conditions are normally caused by and imbalance with the Heart-Mind and Spirit. It can be resolved through using acupuncture points along the heart meridian on the inside of the arms. As well as the heart meridian the acupuncture points in the ears and head are also very effective for balancing neurotransmitters and activating the parasympathetic (relaxation) nervous system. Part of the outer ear is actually innervated by the Vagus Nerve, Cranial nerve number 10 which main function is relaxation of the body and organs. See research here.
Anxiety, Mindfulness and Personal Reflection
Apart from the acupuncture treatment which settles the nervous system and calms the mind, we also need to develop some skills to be able to confidently handle the horrible and debilitating feelings of panic and anxiety. I teach these skills to all patients who are interested in learning. The best thing about these skills is that once learnt and developed most people no longer need to seek treatment for their anxiety ever again!!!.
While these skills are being developed Acupuncture has a wonderful ability to relax, calm and settle us and allows our minds to feel balanced, stable, clear and in control.
